As threat from global terrorism looms over India, especially with hostile neighbours such as Pakistan and China, India told the United Nations Security Council that the Islamic State, active mostly in West Asia, is not just another terrorist group, but a global syndicate that has several affiliated outfits across the world, especially in the Indian subcontinent.
UN Deputy Permanent Representative – Political Coordinator R Ravindra said that the sole accountability for terrorist acts and stringent measures against states that aid terrorism only can strengthen the credibility of a global fight against the malady.
“The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has carried out inhuman atrocities against the people of Iraq. Victims of ISIL’s horrific crimes also included 39 Indian nationals,” he said at the Security Council briefing on Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD).
Islamic State is a terrorist group with a radical ideology that pronounces it a caliphate, claiming religious authority over all Muslims.
Ravindra said that ISIS has systematically committed genocide, rape, slavery, torture and kidnapping throughout the territory that is under its control in Iraq and Syria.
“The Islamic State, therefore, cannot be seen as just another regional terrorist outfit. It is a global syndicate with affiliated terrorist groups across the world, including in our neighbourhood,” he said.
