Mumbai Indians (MI) have confirmed Akash Madhwal as Suryakumar Yadav’s replacement ahead of their last two games of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The announcement comes with just two matches left for the five-time champions in IPL 2022. Madhwal has been with MI since the start of the season as a net bowler.
“Mumbai Indians have signed Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav. Akash Madhwal, has been with the Mumbai Indians as part of the support team and has now signed on to join the squad for the 2022 season,” said the Rohit Sharma-led franchise in a statement.
“Akash Madhwal is a right arm medium fast bowler and has represented Cricket Association of Uttarakhand across all three formats of the game since making his debut in 2019. Akash was chosen at the MI preseason camp to join the support team and has over the months demonstrated his ability with the ball, earning him the opportunity to join the season squad,” MI added.
MI talisman batter Suryakumar Yadav was ruled out of the tournament last week after suffering a muscle strain on his left forearm. The Indian batter scored 303 runs in 8 matches during the ongoing season and was one of the few players who lived up their reputation for the franchise this season.
Madhwal is a right-arm pacer who players for Uttarakhand in domestic cricket. The 28-year-old has played a total of six first-class, 11 List A, and 15 T20 games. In the shortest format, he has taken 15 wickets in as many matches an economy of 7.55.
MI will face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday (May 17). Their final game of the 15th edition is at the same venue on Saturday (May 21) vs Delhi Capitals. The league’s most successful franchise are currently sitting on 10th place and heading for a last-place finish for the first time in history.
Earlier MI had announced Tristan Stubbs and Kumar Kartikeya as replacements for Tymal Mills and Arshad Khan who also suffered injuries.
