Even though Mahendra Singh Dhoni is embracing the twilight phase of his iconic cricket career, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has remained keen on smashing new records in the 15th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Nicknamed Thala, the former Chennai Super Kings skipper is set to join Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma in an elite list on Sunday. In match No.11 of the IPL 2022 between CSK and Punjab Kings (PBKS), Dhoni can also surpass his ex-teammate Suresh Raina in an elite list.
Former CSK skipper needs to score only three sixes to break into the top 5 list of players with the most maximums for a single team in the shortest format. Legendary West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle has smashed 263 sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) while Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder Kieron Pollard has fired 249 sixes for the Rohit-led side. RCB icons AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli had smashed 240 and 226 sixes respectively for the Bangalore franchise in the world’s richest T20 league.
Former CSK star Raina has scored 219 sixes for CSK. Chennai icon Dhoni can also eclipse Ross Taylor in the all-time list of batters with the most sixes in T20 cricket. Thala Dhoni has fired 307 sixes from 349 matches. Interestingly, Dhoni will also record his 350th appearance in the shortest format when CSK lock horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS)at the Brabourne Stadium on Sunday. The 40-year-old will join Rohit on the list of players with 350 or more appearances in T20 cricket.
One of the most decorated cricketers in the history of the game, Dhoni had relinquished the CSK captaincy before the start of the new season. The Ranchi stalwart had picked Ravindra Jadeja as his successor at Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni had guided Chennai to their fourth IPL title in the 14th season of the cash-rich league.
