India’s campaign at Commonwealth Games 2022 ended with a heartbreaking 7-0 loss against six-time champions Australia. India ended the campaign with a silver medal, which took their overall medals tally to 61 – which includes 22 gold, 16 silver, 23 bronze. Up against the mighty Australians, India looked off colour as the defending champions won a record seventh gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
At CWG 2022, India finished at fourth position, only behind Australia (178 medals), England (175 medals) and Canada (92 medals) who finished first second and third respectively.
The shuttlers rose to the occasion on the final day for India as PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen as well as the men’s doubles pair of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bagged gold medals at CWG 2022.
Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu clinched India’s first gold medal in Badminton which was also the first women’s singles CWG gold medal of her career as she defeated Canada’s Michelle Li 21-15, 21-13 in the final on Monday. Not to forget, Sindhu had won a silver medal at 2018 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Earlier, Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen defeated Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong in the final of the men’s singles category in Birmingham on Monday. Sen fought back brilliantly after losing the first game. He won the match by 19-21, 21-19 and 21-16.
The men’s doubles duo of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won India its third successive badminton gold of the day by defeating England’s Sean Vendy and Ben Lane in the final at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Monday.
At Commonwealth Games 2018 at Gold Coast, India finished third with an overall tally of 66 medals which included 26 gold medals, 20 silver medals and 20 bronze medals.
Shooting, one of India’s strongest disciplines, was not a part of CWG 2022. In the last edition of the showpiece event, India won as many as 7 gold medals in shooting, along with 4 silver and 5 bronze medals.
