Shubman Gill continued his purple patch in 2023 and slammed the fifth century of the year. After missing out on a big score in Indore, Gill showed why he deserved to be part of the playing XI right from the series opener and became only the second Indian to breach the three-figure mark in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.
As Gill hit Nathan Lyon for a boundary to complete his century, he joined an elite list of batsmen to score centuries in all formats in a year. The youngster is only the 10th player to become part of this list. Among Indians, three other players have achieved this unique milestone.
Suresh Raina, who scored a century on his Test debut in 2010, became the first batsman to achieve this record. In 2016, KL Rahul joined Raina in this list. Rahul made his Test debut in 2014 while his white-ball debuts came 2 years later. He scored a century on his ODI debut against Zimbabwe.
In 2017, Rohit Sharma joined Raina and Rahul in the list. After six years, Gill scored a century in all formats to join this illustrious list. The youngster has 3 ODI centuries, one T20I century and one Test century in 2023. The 3 ODI tons include a double-century against New Zealand.
Talking of players from other countries, Mahela Jayawardene (2010), Tillakaratne Dilshan (2011), Ahmed Shehzad (2014), Tamim Iqbal (2016), David Warner (2019) and Babar Azam (2022) are also part of this list. Since there are very few players who play all formats regularly, it is tough for them to achieve this unique record and become a part of the elite list.
Gill is batting solidly against Australia and will aim to score a double-century. He was benched for the first two Test matches as India backed KL Rahul. Gill has now fixed his spot and looks set to get a long rope.
