Former Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar, who had joined the Trinamool Congress in November last year, has snapped his ties with Mamata Banerjee’s party and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Tanwar joined the AAP on Monday in the presence of AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Joining of Tanwar could give a fillip to the AAP which is seeking to expand its base in Haryana in view of the Assembly polls in 2024.
Welcoming Tanwar to the party, Kejriwal said that his political experience from will certainly prove to be of great help to the AAP in Haryana and across the country.
“Welcome to the Aam Aadmi Party family, Ashok ji. Your political experience from student politics to Parliament will certainly prove to be of great help to the party organisation in Haryana and across the country,” the AAP chief said in a tweet.
Tanwar, once a close aide of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, was earlier an MP from Sirsa in Haryana. He had quit the Congress in 2019.
He was president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) and also served as the president of Indian Youth Congress and the party’s students’ wing NSUI.
