West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she does not support corruption or any wrongdoings as she condemned the “malicious campaign” running against her.
The CM’s reaction came amid the criticism by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on her silence over the arrest of the state’s Commerce and Industries Minister and close confidante Partha Chatterjee in connection with the recruitment irregularities in West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) when he was the state Education Minister.
“I don’t support corruption or any wrongdoing. If anyone is found guilty, he or she must be punished, but I condemn malicious campaign against me,” Banerjee was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
She further attacked the BJP, saying it is “wrong if it thinks it can break my party using agencies.”
On Sunday, the BJP slammed the Trinamool Congress chief for her silence over the arrest of Chatterjee, saying it is an admission of corruption committed by the minister.
“Nothing else explains Mamata Banerjee’s silence on Partha Chatterjee, her close confidant, now in jail, except an admission of the crime, when she had hit the road to defend a police officer! Mamata may be trying to distance herself from Partha, but their association is well known,” West Bengal BJP Co-incharge Amit Malviya tweeted.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had on Saturday arrested Chatterjee in connection with the alleged scam. The ED sleuths had on July 22 carried out raids at various places in the state as part of their probe into the money trail involved in it and reportedly recovered crores of rupees in cash from the residential premises of Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of Chatterjee.
Chatterjee was arrested on Saturday by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the recruitment irregularities in West Bengal School Service Commission when he was the state Education Minister.
