Continuing India’s golden run at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in weightlifting, Achinta Sheuli secured India’s six medals in Birmingham late on Sunday (July 31) night. Sheuli won the gold medal in the mens’ 73 kg category after a sensational lift of 313 kgs.
Sheuli’s victory was India’s third gold medal at the 2022 CWG after Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinnunga also stood on top of the podium over the weekend. Sheuli lifted 143 kg in the snatch and followed it up with a gold-medal winning lift of 170 kg in the clean and jerk. The 20-year-old created a new games record in the process of his exceptional effort in Birmingham.
After his victory, Sheuli received praise from all over the country. Among those to laud his effort was Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi. PM Modi posted a clip from his conversation with Sheuli during the Indian contingent’s meeting with him.
“Before our contingent left for the Commonwealth Games, I had interacted with Achinta Sheuli. We had discussed the support he received from his mother and brother. I also hope he gets time to watch a film now that a medal has been won,” wrote Modi on Twitter alongside a video of his interaction with Sheuli.
In the clip, Sheuli could be heard telling the Indian Prime Minister about his love for Yoga and how his parents supported him throughout the journey. The youngster also spoke about his love for going to watch movies in the cinema.
“Delighted that the talented Achinta Sheuli has won a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games. He is known for his calm nature and tenacity. He has worked very hard for this special achievement. My best wishes to him for his future endeavours,” also wrote Modi.
India have guaranteed medals in Judo and Lawn Bowls on Monday (August 1). They assured of winning at least a sliver in both sports.
