Team India will be undergoing a few changes after the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. There will be a new head coach and his coaching staff at the helm of affairs following the ICC event and a new T20 captain will also take over the charge. Present skipper Virat Kohli had announced his decision to step down from the job recently.
While his deputy Rohit Sharma looks set to take over the charge right from the New Zealand series, which starts 3 days after the WC final, there is still no confirmation and the plans could change if the BCCI wants. KL Rahul, a two-time vice-captain, and Rishabh Pant are other strong contenders in the fray.
Sharing his take on the next T20I captain, former India pacer Ashish Nehra has thrown his weight behind Jasprit Bumrah and said that he can be a captaincy contender. Backing his pick, Nehra has said that Bumrah is a member of playing XI across all 3 formats whereas Rahul and Rishabh have had spent time on the bench.
“After Rohit Sharma, we are hearing the names of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul [as contendors]. Rishabh Pant has traveled around the world but has also carried drinks and has even been left out from the team before. KL Rahul returned to Test cricket because Mayank Agarwal was injured… So Jasprit Bumrah can be an option too. As Ajay [Jadeja] said, he’s sturdy, a certainty in the team, and is always in the XI for all formats. It’s nowhere written in the rule book that fast bowlers can’t be captains,” Nehra told
Surely, Bumrah is a senior player and an automatic pick but the chances of him being given the leadership job are bleak. He could be a strong contender for vice-captaincy if Rahul pips Rohit for the top job. The selection committee had named bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar as Shikhar Dhawan’s deputy for the Sri Lanka tour
The BCCI will be unveiling the new T20I captain next week when it announces the squad for the NZ series. It remains to be seen if the committee announces a new captain for ODIs too or not.
