After treating audiences to the action-packed blockbuster Singham Again, actor Ajay Devgn and filmmaker Rohit Shetty are set to revive the Golmaal franchise. The highly awaited fifth installment of the successful Golmaal franchise will be Rohit’s next big project. The official announcement was made by the ace director during an interview with Pinkvilla.
While discussing his forthcoming projects, Rohit said that he plans to dive into the comedy genre before returning to action films, which have been his focus lately. “I think before any cop film for sure, Golmaal will be the next.”
Ajay also shared his take on it and talked about the struggles of doing a comedy after a power-packed action film. “I don’t have any problem shifting between genres. I am in my character between ‘action’ and ‘cut,’ but after that, I am just myself. If I was always in my character, I would go crazy,” he said during the interview.
The Golmaal franchise started in 2006 with Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, featuring Ajay Devgn as Gopal aka Gopu Kumar Santoshi, Tusshar Kapoor as Lucky Gill, Arshad Warsi as Madhav Singh Ghai, and Sharman Joshi as Laxman Prasad Sharma. The film also starred Rimi Sen and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles. The second film, Golmaal Returns, released in 2008, and joined the cast were Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Shreyas Talpade.
The third installment, Golmaal 3, saw Mithun Chakraborty, Kareena Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Khemu, Ratna Pathak Shah and Johnny Lever, besides star actor of the franchise Ajay Devgn. The movie’s plot was taken from Basu Chatterjee’s 1978 film Khatta Meetha, which was inspired by the 1968 film Yours, Mine and Ours.
The fourth installment Golmaal Again, which released in 2017, introduced new faces such as Tabu, Parineeti Chopra, and Neil Nitin Mukesh, besides the original cast. The film franchise had become a huge hit by then, and despite its clash with Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar, the Golmaal Again turned out to be one of the highest-grossing films of that year.
Other Sequels And Prequels In Works
Apart from Golmaal 5, Ajay Devgn also confirmed next parts of his other hit films including De De Pyaar De, Son of Sardar and Dhamaal. Talking about why the focus is on sequels and the reason they are doing so well in theatres, Ajay said, “This is the time for sequels, and that’s happening because the audience is prepared to know what they are going to get in the film. The characters become relatable and the audience is sure on what they will get on the big screen.”
