Flew to Saudi Arabia knowing I was going to lose: Goldberg clears Universal Championship win rumours

More than two years after his shocking and surprising win over The Fiend, Goldberg has addressed the rumours of him lobbying for a win against the former champion. Goldberg’s win over The Fiend at Super Super ShowDown 2020 was a shocking moment as The Fiend was riding high after defeating Seth Rollins.
But Goldberg halted The Fiend’s momentum. The Fiend did regain the championship at SummerSlam 2020 but his title reign lasted for only one week. He lost to Roman Reigns, who has kept the title since then.
Discussing his win over The Fiend, Goldberg has revealed that he flew to Saudi Arabia knowing that he was going to lose the match. Speaking on Shak Wrestling youtube channel, Goldberg has hinted that it was a last-minute decision to put the title on him.
“Let’s put it this way. I’ve never said anything that wasn’t true in the wrestling business. I’m a talent and I do what the boss tells me to do. I flew to Saudi Arabia knowing I was going to lose. Then somehow it changed and the finish was different. It surely wasn’t me because it’s an extremely selfish move to do. Number two: truly it wouldn’t be about the business. It would be about myself. Number three: who the hell am I as a part-time guy to come in and demand anything? Truly, I’m not,” Goldberg said.
The WWE Hall of Famer was slated to face Reigns at Wrestlemania 36 but the match didn’t take place due to the latter pulling out of the event. Goldberg instead lost to Braun Strowman. The Universal Championship moved back to The Fiend four months later.
Despite being a part-timer, Goldberg is in the title picture whenever he returns. In 2021, he challenged Drew McIntyre (at Royal Rumble) and Bobby Lashley (at SummerSlam) for the WWE Championship. In February 2022, he unsuccessfully challenged Reigns for the Universal Championship.
