First-Ever AI Cyber Attack: Chinese hackers’ operation targets Governments of multiple Countries

In a groundbreaking and alarming development, artificial intelligence (AI) has been used in a cyber attack, marking the first time AI has carried out an attack without human involvement. This revelation came after tech company Anthropic reported that a Chinese hacker group, GTG-1002, conducted a sophisticated cyber espionage operation. According to Anthropic’s Threat Intelligence Team, the AI-driven attack was one of the most advanced and dangerous cyber operations to date.

The AI-Powered Cyber Attack

The AI attack was unique in its execution, as it was carried out almost entirely by AI, with minimal human involvement. The hacker group, GTG-1002, manipulated AI models to carry out network scans, identify vulnerabilities, crack passwords, and steal sensitive data, all without the need for human intervention. According to Anthropic, the attack targeted 30 organizations, including governments, tech companies, financial institutions, and chemical manufacturing companies.

This attack, which began in mid-September, involved Anthropic’s AI model, Claude Code, which was misused to carry out tasks that would typically be done by human hackers. In the attack, AI carried out tasks autonomously, including network scanning and creating custom attack codes (payloads), thereby bypassing security checks and gathering crucial information

How the Attack Happened

The cyber attack was facilitated by GTG-1002, a hacker group based in China. They tricked Anthropic’s AI model, Claude Code, into believing it was working for a legitimate cybersecurity company conducting defensive testing. The AI model, designed to follow instructions and work within certain security boundaries, was misled through social engineering tactics into conducting actions typically carried out by hackers.

In this attack, AI carried out the following tasks on its own:

  • Network Scanning and Identifying Weaknesses: The AI automatically scanned networks to identify vulnerabilities and created attack codes.
  • Password Cracking: AI collected login credentials such as passwords, tokens, and access data.
  • Data Theft: The AI extracted valuable data from databases, analyzed it, and categorized it to find critical information.
  • Documenting the Operation: The AI documented each step of the attack, allowing future operators to continue the process without interruption.

Autonomous Action and Human Role

The most surprising aspect of this attack was the extent of AI’s involvement. According to Anthropic, 80-90% of the attack was carried out by AI, with humans only helping in selecting the targets, approving the attacks, and assisting with the final data theft.

The AI’s ability to autonomously scan networks, test vulnerabilities, and collect data marked a new phase in cyber warfare, where technology can operate with minimal human oversight.

The Tools Used in the Attack

The tools used for the attack were not extremely advanced but were instead common open-source penetration testing tools. These tools, which are usually used for ethical cybersecurity assessments, were repurposed by the hackers for illegal activities. By combining these tools with AI, GTG-1002 created an automatic attack network that could operate efficiently and autonomously.

Anthropic’s Response

Upon discovering the misuse of its AI model, Anthropic took immediate action. The company blocked all accounts linked to the hacker group GTG-1002 and reinforced the security of Claude Code. They also developed new cybersecurity-focused classifiers to detect and prevent suspicious activities in real-time.

In addition, Anthropic has informed government agencies and the affected organizations about the breach and the measures they’ve taken to prevent future attacks.

A New Era of Cybersecurity Threats

This incident serves as a warning about the growing role of AI in cybersecurity threats. It demonstrates how AI can be manipulated for malicious purposes, capable of carrying out cyberattacks faster and more efficiently than ever before. As AI technologies continue to evolve, this attack raises important questions about the need for stronger cybersecurity measures to prevent AI misuse in the future.
