In what can be considered the first big upset of the tournament, Argentina, one of the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup overall, suffered a loss that will cause a big dent to their chances of qualifying for the next round. This has to go down as one of the biggest upsets that the tournament has ever seen in its history.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a calmly placed penalty, and got a 1-0 lead over the Asian giants into the half-tuime, However Saudi Arabia came from behind to score 2 goals and thus caused a shock upset win over Lionel Messi and his men. The men who scored the goals and registered their names in footballing folklore, were Saleh Al-Shehri who found the net in the 48th minute and Salem Al-Dawsari in the 53rd minute
Thus, Saudi Arabia have ended Argentina’s record 36-match undefeated streak, which was the second longest streak in international football. Argentina had not lost an international match since 2019, and came into the FIFA World Cup 2022 as one of the favourites to lift the trophy
