‘Exercise caution, remain vigilant’: India issues advisory for nationals amid hate crime incidents in Canada

The Indian government  issued an advisory for Indian nationals and students staying in Canada, noting that there has been a sharp rise in the incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities there.
In a press release, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that it has, in coordination with Indian High Commission/Consulates General in Canada, raised the matter concerning such incidents with the relevant authorities in Canada.
The MEA has called on the Canadian authorities to probe these crimes and initiate appropriate action in the matter.
“The perpetrators of these crimes have not been brought to justice so far in Canada,” the MEA stated categorically.
The ministry said Indian nationals and students in Canada should exercise caution and remain vigilant.
“In view of the increasing incidences of crimes as described above, Indian nationals and students from India in Canada and those proceeding to Canada for travel/education are advised to exercise due caution and remain vigilant,” the advisory stated.
“Indian nationals and students from India in Canada may also register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or Consulates General of India in Toronto and Vancouver through their respective websites, or the MADAD portal madad.gov.in. Registration would enable the High Commission and the Consulates General to better connect with Indian citizens in Canada in the event of any requirement or emergency,” it added.
On Thursday, India reacted sharply to the “so-called Khalistan referendum” in Canada, with the MEA spokesperson calling it “deeply objectionable”. He noted with regret that Canada allowed such a “politically motivated” activity by extremist elements in a friendly country.
Arindam Bagchi told the weekly press briefing that the Indian authorities had raised the matter with their Canadian counterparts via diplomatic channels.
“You are all aware of the violence in this regard,” Bagchi said and described the “so-called Khalistan referendum” a “farcical exercise”.
Bagchi further stated that the Canadian government has assured New Delhi it respects the sovereignty and integrity of India and that it will not recognise the so-called referendum that took place in the country.
