Eoin Morgan opens up on going unsold at mega auction despite leading KKR to IPL 2021 final, labels it ‘win-win’ situation

Among the list of unsold players, the likes of Suresh Raina, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma finding no takers shocked many but one of the biggest surprises was no one showed interest in former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Eoin Morgan, who led his side to the final in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
While Morgan’s captaincy was appreciated by many, his poor returns with the bat might have worked against him and no team showed any interest. However, Morgan wasn’t worried about being not part of the IPL 2022 instead admitted that it was a win-win situation for him.
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Morgan said that playing in the IPL has been a memorable experience for him but he used this time being with the family looking at the busy schedule for the rest of the year till the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.
“[I looked at the IPL] as a win-win, to be honest. Being there at the biggest tournament in the world is an experience that I’ve used to my advantage over the years and I’ve had some great memories and experiences along the way. But looking to the rest of the year for us, once I start playing again, it doesn’t stop until after the World Cup. I’ve had a lovely period at home: good family time,” Morgan said.
In 17 games, Morgan scored just 133 runs at an average of 11 and neither he was retained by KKR nor he did they show interest in him at the auction. KKR splurged 12.25 crore on former Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer and he was named Morgan’s successor for the two-time champions.
KKR have started well in the 15th edition of the cash-rich league with three wins in 5 games and would be hoping to go one better than last year.
