Until the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season, Dinesh Karthik’s international career looked all but over. But now, the veteran wicket-keeper batter seems to have cemented his place as India’s No. 1 ‘finisher’ in T20 cricket.
Karthik gave another fine example of his finishing abilities with a knock of 41 off 21 in the first T20I against West Indies on Friday. Courtesy of his performance, the 37-year-old was named the Player of the Match as India secured a 68-run win.
Though the T20 World Cup 2022 is still about three months away, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selector has suggested that Karthik has already cemented his place in the team.
Who can stop Dinesh Karthik now? He is certainty now for T20 World Cup in Australia. He is consistent in his approach and most importantly consistently delivering via his approach. His experience will now be a big asset”, the selector was quoted as saying by Insidesport.
The selector also stressed that no formal talks over selection matters have been held, Karthik’s performance and attitude have impressed the selection committee.
“No formal talk has happened on the subject. Informally when we speak, all are very impressed with him and his attitude”, the selector added
Karthik smashed Windies bowlers all across the park with ease. Since the start of the IPL Season 15, the veteran stumper has proven to be one of the best in his position. Speaking of the role allotted to him by the Indian team, Karthik said that he is enjoying the responsibility a lot.
“I have been enjoying it a lot. it is a very interesting role. It is not something that you can be very consistent with but on some days, you can make an impact on the team. You need the backing of the captain and coach and I have got that in abundance,” he said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
In all likeliness, Karthik will be in Team India’s plans for the T20 World Cup 2022 unless his resurrection takes a dramatic u-turn.
