A Delhi court has granted activist Sharjeel Imam a 10-day interim bail in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, according to a report by news agency PTI. The temporary relief was given so that he can attend his brother’s wedding and also take care of his ailing mother.
The development has been welcomed by supporters of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, especially the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP). The party described Chief Justice of India Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s remarks as a “ray of hope for hundreds of Kashmiris in jail,” after he reportedly said that Khalid and Imam should have been granted bail.
Both Khalid and Imam were arrested under Section 15A of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly instigating the 2020 Delhi riots. Earlier this year, on January 5, the Supreme Court denied them bail. However, the court granted bail to five other accused in the case, citing the “hierarchy of participation” while considering their roles in the alleged conspiracy.
