CWG 2022: World Champion Nikhat Zareen clinches India’s third boxing gold, beats Carly McNaul in final

World Champion Nikhat Zareen has secured India’s third gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in boxing. Zareen registered a comfortable win over Northern Ireland’s Carly McNaul in the summit clash of the women’s 50 KG category to seal her first ever medal in CWG history.
Zareen had reached the final by defeating Savannah Stubley of England 5-0. The judges had declared her the winner by a unanimous decision. She had won her round of 16 and Quarter-final encounter against Helena Bagao and Helan Jones respectively by the same margin.
This is India’s third gold medal of the day in the sport of boxing. Earlier in the day, Nitu Ghanghas (Women’s 48 KG) and Amit Panghal (Men’s 51 KG) had clinched the golds to kickstart a glorious campaign for India in boxing at the Commonwealth Games.
Apart from the three golds, India also have three bronze medals to their name in boxing in the current games. Rohit Tokas (Men’s 67 KG), Mohammad Hussamuddin (Men’s 57 KG), and Jaismine Lamboria (Women’s 60 KG) have also won bronze medals in Birmingham.
The CWG victory continues an incredible run of form in 2022 for Zareen. Earlier in the year, she was crowned as the world champion after winning the gold in the women’s flyweight competition at the 2022 Boxing World Championships in Turkey.
India’s medal tally in boxing could see another gold later in the day. In the men’s 92 KG category, Sagar Ahlawat will Delicious Orie in the gold medal bout on Sunday (August 7) evening.
Currently, India are fourth on the medal’s tally with a total of 48 medals to their name. They have won 17 golds, 12 silvers, and 19 bronze medals in edition so far. Wrestling proved to be India’s most successful sport as India won 12 medals in the sport which included six golds.
