India has already ensured seven medals at the Commonwealth games 2022. However, the man who opened the account for the country was weightlifter Sanket Sargar who clinched a silver medal in the men’s 55-kg category.
The weightlifter lifted a total of 248 kg (113 in snatch, 135 in clean and jerk) to clinch the silver medal, and finish just 1 kg short of the eventual gold medallist Aniq Kasdan of Malaysia.
Sargar also earned plaudits for his extreme courage that he displayed at the event. During his third attempt in clean and jerk, the Indian weightlifter tried to lift a weight of 139 kg but couldn’t do so, and seemingly suffered an injury on his right hand. However, despite the pain, he continued to re-attempt the lift, but failed to do so.
However, he genuinely hurt himself, as he was diagnosed with the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury on his right elbow. In fact, he even came to the medal ceremony with his arm wrapped in bandages. It has now been reported by Press Trust of India (PTI) that Sankhet Sargar will stay back in the United Kingdom for his UCL injury treatment. A UCL injury usually takes around three months to completely heal.
“There were two options with Sanket. To take him back to India or treat him here. After initial assessment, we thought it is best we treat him in the UK itself. We are chatting with elbow injury experts and the government has okayed his treatment,” a team source told PTI.In the snatch category, Sanket Sargar successfully lifted the 107 kgs in the first attempt and followed it up with another impressive lift of 111 kgs. However, his best attempt came in his third attempt when he lifted 113 kg. The 21-year-old assured himself a medal by a lift of 137 kg in his first clean and jerk attempt. His second and third try of 139 kg ended in failed attempts.
