The Indian Premier League (IPL) scaled new heights as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the whopping figures for which its media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle were bought. Preity Zinta, the co-owner of the Punjab Kings franchise in the IPL, expressed her pride in seeing the T20 league’s incredible growth.
Zinta has been associated with the IPL from the very beginning. As a co-owner of Punjab Kings, she herself has witnessed a few topsy-turvy moments in the league. But, the growth that the IPL has shown over the years, isn’t commonly seen.
For the 2023-2027 cycle, the media rights for the television and digital have been sold for a combined fee of over INR 44,000 crore. A couple of packages are yet to be sold. The overall revenue that the BCCI would generate from the IPL media rights, hence could even go past INR 50,000 mark.
What’s amazing to see is that because of these figures, the IPL has left behind the likes of English Premier League, NBA, MLB, etc. in terms of per-match revenue, with only the NFL ahead of the Indian T20 league.
Zinta, reacting to the amazing revenue figures that the BCCI will get for the lucrative T20 league, admitted how proud she feels knowing that the IPL is completely ‘Made in India’.
“Waiting to hear the BCCI announce the new #Iplmediarights. What an incredible sports property #IPL has become! Employing thousands & entertaining billions across the globe, it’s dwarfing all other sports leagues by its incredible growth & it’s completely Made In India,” she tweeted.
According to a June 3 Elara Capital report, the digital viewership of IPL is expected to rise at an annualised rate of 14% in 10 years through March 2028. In comparison for television, the forecast is a CAGR of 1%.
