Communal clashes have been reported in Jharkhand’s Palamu over Maha Shivratri preparations. The situation remains tense in the area and stones were pelted at forces that reached the spot. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 was imposed in Palamu’s Panki town following the clash, news reports said.
It was reported that at least six people were injured in the clashes. Disturbing scenes from the spot showed mobs pelting stones at each other and vandalising two-wheelers parked on roadsides. A few houses were set ablaze by the violent mobs, sources said. The epicentre of the violence is said to be an area around 200 metres away from Palamu’s Masjid Chowk.
The violence reportedly started over decorations being put up ahead of the Maha Shivratri. The situation escalated with people attacking each other with bricks and lathis. The welcome board installed ahead of Maha Shivratri was damaged and a few houses were set ablaze, news reports said.
Inspector General of Police (Palamu) Raj Kumar Lakra confirmed a handful of miscreant from either groups have been detained by the police team, the Indian Express said in a report. Deputy Commissioner A Dode is among the police officials who have reached the spot, the news report added.
Meanwhile, around 20-25 school students remain stuck in their classrooms due to the spreading violence.
