India have won their first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham with Sanket Sargar winning the Silver Medal. Weightlifter Sargar clinched the silver medal in the Men’s 55 KG category.
Sanket Mahadev Sargar started his challenge in the 55kg weight category on a stupendous note. In the medal match, the Sangli-born weightlifter was listed at 107kgs, equal to his stiff competitor Malaysia’s Anik Kasdan.
Sargar successfully lifted the 107kgs in the first attempt and followed it up with another outstanding lift of 111kgs. Kasdan too replicated by registering his second attempt at 111 but failed to lift it.
Sargar then increased a couple of kgs in his final attempt and that too was a clean one as he was able to lift the 113kgs. Kasdan faltered again as he finished at second place in the snatch with 107 kgs.
The 21-year-old assured himself a medal by a lift of 137KG in his first clean and jerk attempt. His second and third try of 139KG ended in failed attempts. Sanket looked all set to take the Gold but Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan sensational lift of 142 KG in the last attempt which was a CWG record in the Clean and Jerk earned him the top prize.
Lanka’s Dilanka Yodage with his successful attempt of 105 kgs finished while Uganda’s David Niyoyita, who was listed at 100kgs was disqualified after his all three failed lifts.
What is difference between snatch and clean & jerk?
There are two types of lifting – snatch and clean & jerk. While snatch is a single-movement lift into an upright position in just over two seconds, in clean and jerk the athlete can maintain an air suspension of about 7 to 10 seconds from start to finish, which also includes a 4-5 second gap in the middle.
