Climate change: Certain disconnect between what policymakers aim to achieve and actual impact of policies, says CEA

Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran on Monday said that there has been certain disconnect between what policy-makers wanted to achieve in terms of climate change goals and the kind of impact these policies have on ground.
He stressed that when it comes achieving the green energy targets, there are two important points — the sequencing of action in the right manner and convincing the public.
“…to make the world achieve its green energy targets, the two things we need to focus on are …sequencing the action in the right way and the second thing is are we able to convince our public, not only the Indian public but the global public,” Nageswaran said.
Talking about the disconnect, he said one of the things learnt from the 2008 crisis and subsequently from the kind of policy frame works that were implemented in the last 14 years or so, “there is a certain disconnect between what the policymakers aim to achieve and the kind of impact they have on ground with respect to the average family or the household whether it is in the developed world or developing world.”
On India’s commitment to green energy and measures towards global climate change, he said, “Given that the vast commitments that India has made and also India is quite serious about meeting (the green energy target) and in the last couple of days we have seen reports about India having achieved its ethanol blending target few months ahead of its schedule.”
So clearly there is a commitment and there is a seriousness of intent as far as India is concerned, Nageswaran said adding that and having the right kind of data on information and monitoring systems to give feedback to policymakers is one of the important things.
