The Indian government has strongly dismissed recent allegations implicating a top leader in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet in actions against Sikh separatists in Canada, calling the claims “absurd and baseless.” In response, India summoned a representative of the Canadian High Commission on Friday, delivering a formal note of protest.
Ministry of External Affairs’ Firm Response
During a press conference, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Regarding the latest Canadian target, we summoned the representative of the Canadian High Commission yesterday… It was conveyed in the note that the Government of India protests in the strongest terms to the absurd and baseless references made… before the Committee by Deputy Minister David Morrison.”
Background of Allegations and Intelligence Leaks
Two senior Canadian officials recently acknowledged sharing intelligence and sensitive information with international media, suggesting connections between Indian government agents and acts of violence against Sikh separatists, including the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canadian Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison alleged before a parliamentary panel that a top official in Modi’s Cabinet was involved in these plots.
India Accuses Canada of a Deliberate Smear Campaign
The Indian government rebuked these allegations, suggesting that they are part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish India’s image internationally and influence other nations. The MEA’s statement read, “The revelation that high Canadian officials deliberately leak unfounded insinuations to the international media… confirms the view that the government of India has long held about the current Canadian government’s political agenda and behavioral pattern.”
Growing Strain in India-Canada Relations
India and Canada’s diplomatic relationship has further deteriorated following these accusations. The Indian government warned that “such irresponsible actions will have serious consequences for bilateral ties.” These developments reflect escalating tensions and have raised concerns over the future of India-Canada relations.
