BIG Update On Rohit Sharma’s Retirement And Captaincy Ahead Of Champions Trophy Final

The result of Sunday’s ICC Champions Trophy final has the potential to go a long way in deciding India’s approach to the 2027 ODI World Cup and the ensuing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. It could even determine the destiny of Rohit Sharma as a captain, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) eager to ensure continuity of leadership for the next two years.

The BCCI is exploring a change of captaincy, at least ODIs and Tests, according to sources told TOI. Discussion of moving forward without Rohit as captain is imminent. New central contracts are also on hold, with the board preferring to wait until the final against New Zealand before taking major decisions.

Selectors And Team Management Already In Talks

Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir, chief selector and head coach are in constant talks. According to reports, Rohit was reportedly willing to chalk out a long-term roadmap for the side beyond the Champions Trophy.

“The board will wait for Rohit’s decision after the Champions Trophy. If by any chance he chooses to retire, then the board will see what needs to be done. One can’t discount the fact that he won the T20 World Cup in July and has led well in the Champions Trophy as well,” the source told Times of India

BCCI Delays Central Contracts Amid Leadership Uncertainty

Normally, the BCCI declares its annual retainership of players prior to the IPL, but this year the board is holding back to assess the team’s performance in the Champions Trophy after a disappointing Test season.

“Rohit still believes there is some cricket left in him. He has been told to communicate his plans going forward. Retiring is his call but there will be another discussion around continuing with captaincy. Rohit himself understands the need to have a stable captain if the team wants to prepare for a World Cup. There have been talks with Kohli too but there doesn’t seem to be much anxiety around him,” a BCCI source told TOI.

Players Under BCCI Grade A+ Contract

One of the key considerations is revisiting the Grade A+ contracts, which currently include Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja. Given BCCI’s policy that prioritizes players actively competing in all three formats, concerns have emerged regarding Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja, as they have retired from T20Is and struggled in Tests. However, a strong Champions Trophy campaign could bolster their chances of retaining the top contract.

Moreover, the board can also think about upgrading players such as Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant to Grade A contracts, while Shreyas Iyer is likely to get his central contract back after losing it last year because of disciplinary issues.

Captaincy Transition: Who Can Replace Rohit Sharma?

Virat Kohli has cemented his claim with a superb Champions Trophy performance, but the past indicates that a transition phase is required. MS Dhoni retired as white-ball captain two years prior to the 2019 World Cup so that Kohli could get adjusted to the job. Kohli also stepped down as white-ball captain in 2021 and gave Rohit two years of leadership prior to the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Yet, India has limited options as a next skipper. As inexperienced a captain as Shubman Gill still is in being ODI vice-captain, the repetition of Jasprit Bumrah’s injury problem renders him the wrong pick. Based on all these ifs, the selectors would possibly need longer to finalize the next man-in as Rohit’s successor.

With a big transition phase looming, the final of the Champions Trophy can have long-term consequences for India’s cricketing future. The question on Rohit Sharma’s future in Indian Team still remains unanswered and it will only be clear after the conclusion of Champions Trophy.
