Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its “unfulfilled” promises to the family of the Hathras victim, who died after being gang-raped by four men.
The Congress MP said ‘Beti Bachao’ slogan was just a “pretence” and that BJP had never hesitated in doing “injustice” to women.
Taking to his official Twitter handle, he shared a news article claiming ‘Yogi Adityanath is backtracking on his promises made to Hathras rape victim’s family’.
Quoting the Uttar Pradesh government, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “The brother of the Hathras victim is not a member of the family, so we will not provide a job and a house.”
Attacking the Adityanath-led government, he said, “Even after 2 years, the torture continues with the victim’s family. The talk of ‘Beti Bachao’ was just a pretense, in fact BJP never shied away from doing injustice to daughters.”
Back in September, 2020, a Dalit girl was raped and critically injured at Boolgarhi in Western Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district allegedly by four upper caste Thakurs of the same village. After a 15-day fight, she succumbed to her injuries in a Delhi hospital.
The victim’s family was not allowed to perform the last rites. The administration did it at midnight. Videos and pictures went viral, and the controversy also took a political turn.
Soon after the incident, the chief minister’s office had announced Rs 25 lakh compensation for the the victim’s family, a junior assistant job for a family member and a house in Hathras under the State Urban Development Agency (SUDA) scheme.
