The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a review meeting for the men’s team performance in recent times in the backdrop of a poor display at the 2022 T20 World cup in Australia. The meeting was attended by BCCI chief Roger Binny, board secretary Jay Shah, Indian captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, National Cricket Academy (NCA) head of cricket VVS Laxman, and chief selector Chetan Sharma.
The BCCI has decided to put a marker on the team’s poor results in recent times and taken some strong calls. The biggest of them being that players in contention to make the 2023 ODI World Cup will be monitored by the NCA, who will work closely with franchises for their participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The Yo-Yo Test is set to return too.
“The emerging players will have to play a substantial domestic season to be eligible for selection to the national team. The Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be part of selection criteria and implemented in the customized roadmaps of the central pool of players. Keeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023,” said a BCCI statement.
“The issues of player availability, workload management and fitness parameters were also discussed at length during the meeting along with the roadmap to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023,” the board explained as the purpose of the meeting.
The 2023 ODI World Cup will take place in October-November this year with the final scheduled for November 26. India have not won an ICC trophy for almost a decade having last lifted a global title in 2023 when MS Dhoni led the team to victory in the 2013 Champions Trophy.
