BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Wednesday (January 25) announced the name of the upcoming T20 tournament and revealed that the board received overall bids worth Rs 4669.99 crore. The BCCI’s new T20 league for women will be called “Women’s Premier League.” The BCCI had started the process to launch the tournament last year.
“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered Rs.4669.99 Cr in total bid. This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey ahead not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sports fraternity. The #WPL would bring necessary reforms in women’s cricket and would ensure an all-encompassing ecosystem that benefits each and every stakeholder,” Jay Shah wrote on Twitter. “The @BCCI has named the league – Women’s Premier League (WPL). A total of 5 teams will take part in the inaugural season of the tournament. The BCCI will soon announce the important dates regarding the upcoming event. There will be an auction of players next month. As per Cricbuzz, the franchise will have a purse of Rs 12 crore for IPL 2023 auction. It will be increased to 13. 5 crore in 2024, 15 crore in 2025, 16.5 crore in 2026 and 18 crore in 2027.
The report in Cricbuzz added that a total of 5 overseas players would be allowed in the final XI in WPL. The tournament will be reportedly played in Mumbai from March 4 to 26.
Adani Group (1289 crore), Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd. (912.99 crore), Royal Challengers Bangalore Pvt. Ltd (901 crore), JSW GMR Cricket Pvt. Ltd (810 crore) and Capri Global Holdings Pvt. Ltd (757) made successful bids to acquire franchises.
