Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has opened up on India’s plans for the 2023 ODI World Cup which will take place later this year on home soil. Shah revealed that the board has already shortlisted a total of 20 players for the quadrennial event.
“BCCI has shortlisted 20 players who will be rotated till the 50 overs World Cup,” Shah revealed to reporters after BCCI’s review meeting of the men’s national team which took place on Sunday (January 1) in Mumbai. The meeting was also attended by BCCI chief Roger Binny, Indian captain Rohit Sharna, head coach Rahul Dravid, NCA head of cricket VVS Laxman, and chief selector Chetan Sharma.
In a statement released by the Indian cricket’s governing body, it was revealed that player availability, workload management and fitness parameters were the key discussions alongside preparing a roadmap for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
A major decision taken at the meeting was that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) will work closely with franchises to monitor player participation in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) as the national team continues to see a major injury crisis.
“The emerging players will have to play a substantial domestic season to be eligible for selection to the national team. The Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be part of selection criteria and implemented in the customized roadmaps of the central pool of players. Keeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023,” the BCCI statement stated as the key recommendation.
The 2023 ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place in October-November this year. The final 15-man squad will be announced about a month before the marquee event.
