‘Bad news for Uddhav’: Omar Abdullah after Eknath Shinde named next chief minister of Maharashtra

Moments after the BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis announced Eknath Shinde will be the next chief minister, National Congress leader and former J&K CM Omar Abdullah said it was bad news for Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. Abdullah said Eknath Shinde as the next CM is very bad news for Uddhav Thackeray and his branch of the Shiv Sena. “Uddhav was probably counting on a BJP CM giving him a political weapon to target Shinde with. This makes the job of rebuilding their Shiv Sena much more difficult for Thackerays,” he said.

He further said that if the BJP had agreed to this 2.5 years ago Shiv Sena would not have formed the MVA government with NCP and Congress. “From what I remember the pre-poll alliance fell apart over the CM post for Uddhav. Nonetheless it’s a big sacrifice on the part of the BJP and Devendra Fadnavis,” Omar said.

The BP’s announcement that Eknath Shinde will be the next chief minister surprised many who was expecting Fadnavis to return as CM. However, analysts say the saffron party’s move is aimed at strengthening Shinde faction and project the party as an entity which is not hungry for power as was the impression when it formed the short-lived government with Ajit Pawar in 2019.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar congratulated Shinde on being named as the next chief minister of Maharashtra. He said he sincerely hoped that the interests of the state will be safeguarded by Shinde. “I am happy that after Prithviraj Chavan, another Satarkar has taken over as the Chief Minister,” he said in a tweet.
