It seems that the dreaded Boycott culture has reached cinema of the West as well. A social media campaign, led by Native Americans are urging the audience to not watch the much-awaited James Cameron’s Avatar 2. The film, which has already raked in $134 million at the home BO, while making $307.6 million overseas, has already been called out for its undertones of class oppression and colonialism.
BOYCOTT AVATAR 2
Following the premiere of Avatar 2, a campaign is now calling viewers to boycott the fantastical film. Yuè Begay, a Navajo artist and co-chair of Indigenous Pride Los Angeles took to Twitter to share, “Join Natives & other Indigenous groups around the world in boycotting this horrible & racist film,” adding, ““Our cultures were appropriated in a harmful manner to satisfy some [white flag emoji] man’s savior complex.”
Not only her, Brett Chapman, a Native American civil right attorney says that Avatar is “a White saviour story at its core and James Cameron said the Lakota should have “fought harder” with the foresight that their descendants would all be suicidal. I won’t be seeing the new one. It does nothing for Native Americans but suck oxygen for itself at our expense.”
