‘Amit Shah is controlling CBI, should listen to CJI’: Manickam Tagore

A day after Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana questioned the credibility of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in people’s eyes, Congress MP Manickam Tagore  alleged that the Central government is misusing such agencies.
He also accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of “controlling” the CBI and asked him to “listen” to the CJI.
Reacting to the remarks of CJI Ramana that CBI’s credibility has come under public scrutiny, the Congress MP said, “CJI spoke the truth, Home Minister Amit Shah is controlling CBI. It has lost all its independent views. The govt is misusing CBI, ED… Amit Shah should listen to CJI.”
Yesterday, CJI Ramana said CBI’s credibility has come under deep public scrutiny with the passage of time as its actions and inactions have raised questions in some cases.
The CJI, who was speaking at the 19th D P Kohli Memorial Lecture of CBI on “Democracy: Role and Responsibilities of Investigative Agencies,” said there was an “immediate requirement for the creation of an independent umbrella institution for the investigating agencies to bring various agencies like CBI, SFIO, ED, etc under one roof”.
He said institutions including the Police and the investigative bodies should not allow any authoritarian tendencies to creep in and need to function within the democratic framework as any deviation will hurt them and will weaken our democracy.
