Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the third ODI between India and Bangladesh, which will take place at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Saturday (December 10). The 35-year-old opening batter suffered a thumb injury during the second match, which was played in Dhaka on Wednesday (December 7). Rohit hurt his thumb while fielding at the slips. The incident occurred during the fourth ball of the game’s second over, when Rohit was attempting to complete a catch of Bangladeshi batter Anamul Haque, but failed and injured his thumb in the process.
He left the field in pain and didn’t return to the field again during Bangladesh’s batting. But when the team was in danger of losing the match, the skipper came out to bat at number nine and tried his level best to help India seal the game. But his effort went in vain as they fell short by five runs in the end. Rohit remained unbeaten on 51 runs from 28 balls.
After the end of the 2nd ODI, which India lost by five runs, Indian head coach Rahul Dravid revealed that the right-handed batter will miss the final ODI due to a thumb injury and will travel to Mumbai to consult a specialist.
The unfortunate injury to Rohit raised doubts over his participation in the two-match Test series, which will start on December 14 in Chattogram. And amid all the doubts regarding his participation, BCCI took to Twitter on Friday (December 9) to share an important update about his thumb injury and confirm his absence from the third match.
“India Captain Rohit Sharma suffered a blow to his thumb in the second over while fielding in the 2nd ODI. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him, and he underwent scans at a local hospital in Dhaka. He has flown to Mumbai for specialist consultation and will miss the final ODI. A call on his availability for the upcoming Test series will be taken later,” BCCI said in a release.
After BCCI’s update, there are hopes that Rohit might feature in the two-match Test series, which is important for India to win if it wants to play in the World Test Championship final for the second season in a row.
