Alphabet Inc, the parent company of tech giant Google is set to lay off 12,000 workers. A report by news agency Reuters cited a memo by Alphebet Inc chief executive and said that the parent company will lay off 12,000 workers from across sections.
“We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles… We’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in an email to Google employees, AFP quoted.
This is the latest in the ongoing layoff in tech sector. Earlier this week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella hinted that the company could fire 10,000 emplyees. Google parent company Alphabet Inc’s job cuts may affect employees from sections including recruitment, corporate, engineering as well as product teams.
“The layoffs are global and impact US staff immediately,” Google said Reuters quoted. The development comes on the backdrop of fears that the US economy is heading towards a recession.
“The roles we’re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review… The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here,” Pichai further wrote.
Previously, Facebook owner Meta, Amazon and Twitter have laid off people in the recent past citing economic conditions.
