Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, requesting her to rename Murshidabad University as Raja Krishnath University to cherish the hero of Bengal renaissance.
In 2021, the TMC government in West Bengal has announced to upgrade Krishnath College located at Berhampore, Murshidabad into a full-fledged university and rename it Murshidabad University.
In a letter to Banerjee, the Congress MP stated that the renaming of the institution is a matter of serious local importance and sentimental value and added that the move has robbed the institution of its sentimental value.
“As you are aware, Krishnath College Berhampore is a renowned institution of higher learning in West Bengal. Upgrading this college to a university is a very welcome step by the Government of West Bengal. However, dropping the name of Raja Krishnath in this newly constituted Murshidabad University has robbed it of its local sentimental value,” he mentioned in his letter.
Stating that Raja Krishnath was a legend and a hero of the Bengal renaissance, Chowdhury wrote: “He (Raja Krishnath) dreamt of establishing an institution of higher learning and donated his entire land for the cause.”
He also said that studying in a college established by Raja Krishnath is a “source of great pride” for the students.
“In view of the above, I shall request you to rename the newly constituted Murshidabad University as Raja Krishnath University (Murshidabad) in order to preserve and cherish the memory of the hero of the Bengal renaissance. As a public representative from Berhampore, I appeal to you to initiate necessary administrative and legislative measures for renaming the Murshidabad University,” he added.
