Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that around 75 tunnel National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects with investments of Rs 49,000 crore are currently under construction in the country.
While addressing the ‘World Tunnel Day 2024 Conference on Safe & Sustainable Tunneling,’ Gadkari emphasized the vast potential in India’s tunnel sector.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions India as the world’s third-largest economy. To achieve this, our country needs to have an international standard of infrastructure. Our government is prioritizing the development of good infrastructure in the country,” Gadkari said in the conference.
He further highlighted that NHAI has completed at least 35 tunnel projects, 49 km in length worth Rs 20,000 crore.
Around 75 tunnel projects covering 146 km are under construction in the country at a cost of Rs 49,000 core, while 78 tunnel projects worth Rs 1.10 trillion will cover 285 km.
“Just two days earlier, I had a meeting with Assam CM. We are planning a huge tunnel under the Brahmaputra river. Therefore, I feel all contractors and consultants in this industry have a huge potential, Gadkari added.
