Delhi Air Pollution: Supreme Court Slams Delhi Police, Calls For Review Of School Closures

Delhi to have restrictions on vehicular movements and construction activities. Delhi dealing with bad air quality is under the GRAP Stage IV. The restrictions were imposed after the AQI crossed 450 which comes under ‘Severe Plus’ category. The apex court  refused to withdraw the restrictions under GRAP Stage IV.

 

The Supreme Court has directed directs the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to review the decision to close schools in Delhi-NCR. This is particularly for classes 10th and 12th. The court mentioned that some students can’t attend the online classes and some of them were deprived of the mid-day meal.

The court mentioned that CAQM can take their call on whether to resume the physical classes in schools in Delhi-NCR. The top court ordered Commission for Air Quality Management to take action against the Delhi Police and government for not implementing the curbs to tackle the pollution level in Delhi, as per media reports.

The bench consisting of Justices AS Oka and AG Masih slammed the police commissioner of city for poor implementation of rules in the national capital.
It mentioned in the order that, “Police teams were deputed at a few entry points that also without any explicit instruction. According to the report of court commissioner, most of the entry points the police were posted pursuant to the order of this court dated 23rd November. There is a serious lapse on the authorities concerning clauses 1 – 3. Hence, We direct the Commission to immediately initiate action in terms of section 14 of the CAQM Act.”
