External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that India is not apprehensive about US policy changes following Donald Trump’s re-election as President. Jaishankar highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong rapport with Trump, as well as his effective relationships with previous US presidents, including Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
Jaishankar noted, “We are not one of those countries worried about the US. PM Modi’s approach in building relationships with diverse leaders has strengthened our ties.” Modi congratulated Trump on his “resounding victory,” which, according to the Ministry of External Affairs, reflected Americans’ trust in his leadership.
Emerging Multipolar World and India’s Economic Role
Speaking at an event, Jaishankar discussed the global shift towards a more multipolar world, stressing that India exemplifies this change through its economic rise and international corporate presence. Jaishankar remarked, “There’s a shift in global power dynamics, but traditional industrialized economies remain important investment hubs.”
He advised against overstating the shift, noting that Western economies are still “big markets, strong technology centers, and hubs for innovation.” Jaishankar observed that varying growth rates among nations depend heavily on governance and leadership quality.
PM Modi as a “Demanding and Interactive” Leader
Jaishankar described PM Modi as a highly knowledgeable and meticulous leader, emphasizing that any discussion with him requires thorough preparation and data-backed arguments. “One has to be fully prepared. He’s a demanding boss because he’s well-prepared and expects you to know your case thoroughly,” Jaishankar said.
He added that Modi grants significant operational freedom, especially during crises, such as the Ukraine evacuation. “He made it clear use whatever resources are necessary. That operational freedom, with him tracking but not micromanaging, has made the experience rewarding,” Jaishankar remarked, highlighting Modi’s hands-on yet empowering leadership style.
