Josh Inglis has been announced as Australia’s new T20I captain for the series against Pakistan that will soon get underway and he will also be leading the team for final ODI of the current series to be played in Perth. This comes at a time when Test players are focusing to prepare hard for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Josh Inglis To Take Captaincy Role; Seniors Focus On BGT

Inglis will be replacing the Test captain Pat Cummins in leading the ODI side as, along with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith will sitting out from the final ODI to focus on the preparation for the Tests.

Moreover, to compensate for the absentees, selectors have added pace duo Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett to the ODI side along with keeper-batter Josh Phillipe. Lance Morris was added to the side for the Melbourne game on Wednesday as Hazlewood was on Sheffield Shield duty. Hazlewood has now returned to join the side in Adelaide that is scheduled to clash with the second ODI on Friday. Bartlett is traveling as a back-up player.

With Pat Cummins away preparing for Tests and Mitchell Marsh on paternity leave, Inglis will make his first appearance as captain in the ODI and T20I formats.

Inglis To Also Lead In Third ODI

At 29, Inglis will be the 30th captain of Australia’s ODI team since Bill Lawry led them in the inaugural match in 1971, and the 14th captain for the T20I side since 2005. Though this will be his first time leading in international cricket, Inglis has previous leadership experience having captained the Prime Minister’s XI in 2022 during a drawn match against the West Indies.

For the remaining ODI and all the T20I matches against Pakistan at Brisbane on November 14, Sydney on November 16, and Hobart on November 18, Inglis will be accompanied by teammates who have considerable experience in both leadership and on-field playing.

His promotion came after deep thought and while also considering other white-ball veterans Adam Zampa, Marcus Stoinis and the recent BBL Captains Glenn Maxwell from the Melbourne Stars and Matt Short from the Adelaide Strikers.
