CSK’s Smart Strategy: MS Dhoni’s IPL Comeback Sparks Excitement!

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made significant moves ahead of the IPL 2025 auction by retaining captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (INR 18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (INR 13 crore), Shivam Dube (INR 12 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (INR 18 crore), and the iconic MS Dhoni (INR 4 crore). Dhoni’s retention generated considerable buzz, particularly due to his relatively low price tag, prompting discussions among fans and cricket experts.

New Uncapped Player Rule

Under the new IPL regulations, any player who hasn’t represented India in the last five years is classified as ‘uncapped.’ This change played a crucial role in Dhoni’s retention, as former cricketers Mohammad Kaif and Sanjay Manjrekar humorously critiqued the implications of this rule.

Expert Opinions On CSK’s Strategy

Mohammad Kaif remarked on CSK’s strategic approach, stating, “CSK have played well and saved 10-15 crores. The emotional drive to keep Dhoni for another year allowed them to play smartly. Yes, he is taking less money, but this allows CSK to acquire big-name players at the auction.”

Kaif further added, “If a player has a good IPL run but hasn’t played international cricket recently, they shouldn’t fall under the uncapped rule. CSK navigated this situation expertly, as fans are emotional about Dhoni’s return.”

Sanjay Manjrekar’s Take

Sanjay Manjrekar echoed Kaif’s sentiments, humorously pointing out, “Under this new rule, both you (Kaif) and I would also be considered ‘uncapped’ players.” He suggested that the rule seemed tailored to facilitate Dhoni’s continued presence in the IPL, adding, “This has essentially allowed for a reincarnation of Dhoni, ensuring his return.”
