The T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa still resonates with fans, as key moments like Suryakumar Yadav’s spectacular catch, the bowlers’ dominance in the death overs, and Virat Kohli’s solid half-century helped India clinch the title. However, in a recent appearance on Kapil Sharma’s comedy show, Indian captain Rohit Sharma revealed an additional, lesser-known factor that contributed to India’s success, Rishabh Pant’s clever game management.
Rishabh Pant’s Tactical Break Disrupts South Africa’s Momentum
Rohit shared how Pant’s quick thinking helped India shift the momentum during a crucial phase of the match. When South Africa needed 30 runs off 30 balls, Pant faked a knee injury and took a brief break to slow down the game. This small pause disrupted South Africa’s rhythm, forcing their batters to wait, thus breaking their concentration.
“As South Africa was gaining pace, Pant suddenly went down with a knee injury. The physiotherapist came out to tape his knee, and while the match was paused, Heinrich Klaasen was left waiting. It helped slow things down, and though I’m not saying it was the only reason for our win, it certainly played a part. Pant’s smarts worked in our favor,” Rohit explained.
Hardik Pandya’s Breakthrough and Sledging Strategy
Following the break, Hardik Pandya dismissed the dangerous Klaasen, a crucial turning point in the match. Even though David Miller posed a late threat, the pressure had already mounted on South Africa in the last few overs.
Rohit Sharma further shared that the team resorted to sledging to maintain psychological pressure on the opposition. “Once Klaasen got out, all the boys gathered and started to sledge their batters. I can’t reveal all the details here, but it was important because we were willing to do whatever it took to win. I told the boys to say whatever they felt like, and we would deal with the umpires and referees later,” he admitted.
India’s Grit and Determination Lead to Victory
The combination of Pant’s strategic pause, Hardik’s critical wicket, and the team’s fierce attitude helped India take control of the match in the final overs. Despite South Africa’s best efforts, India managed to handle the pressure and emerge victorious, adding another T20 World Cup trophy to their cabinet.
