Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Former RG Kar Medical College Principal Found ‘Deceptive’ In Polygraph Test

Significant development in the probe into the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that the former principal, Sandip Ghosh, was found to be ‘deceptive’ during his polygraph test and layered voice analysis. Ghosh was arrested on 2 September, first on charges of financial irregularities, but soon, charges of tampering with evidence in connection with the doctor’s murder case were slapped on him.

Polygraph Test Indicates Lie On Major Matters
The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), New Delhi, carried out a polygraph test on Ghosh, who responded abnormally to vital questions relating to the case. Though the result of a polygraph cannot be directly brought before the court as evidence, the investigation may use this to identify several aberrations within the statements themselves and will further help them in collecting corroborative evidence admissible in courts during the trial process.

The polygraph test recorded Ghosh’s psychological responses, such as heart rate, breathing patterns, and blood pressure, which are critical indicators of truthfulness or deception. CBI officials confirmed that Ghosh’s responses on several key issues related to the case were inconsistent.

Delayed Police Complaint And Evidence Tampering Allegations

According to the CBI, it was only at 9.58 AM on August 9 that Ghosh got to know about the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. It did not inform the police in time but instead lodged a “vague complaint” much later with the help of the medical superintendent-vice principal, though the victim was declared dead at 12:44 PM.

The officials further mentioned that, instead of registering an FIR right away, Ghosh allowed the theory of suicide implantation and did not take action on the presence of external injuries on the body of the victim which varied from any suicide theory. Ghosh is also accused of asking his juniors to send the body to the morgue quickly and thus compromised valuable forensic evidence.

Contact With Police And Advocate Caused Suspicion

Also, in this context, the officials claim that even though Ghosh had contact with the police and an advocate, he never considered himself in danger or under suspicion.

The probe found that Ghosh had called the OC Abhijit Mondal of Tala Police Station at 10:03 AM on the day of the incident. However, no initiative was undertaken right then. Mondal arrived only after an hour at the crime scene and delayed its forensic collection. Again, Ghosh is said to have informed an advocate at 1:40 PM, which means there’s an attempt at manipulation of the case.

Even Mondal has been arrested by the CBI for negligence in securing the spot and making sure that nothing was destroyed as evidence. Another revelation to come from the case is that a general diary entry submitted to the police headquarters at 11:30 PM noted the victim was “unconscious,” even though the doctor who examined the body had declared the victim dead.

CBI Frames Charges Of Conspiracy And A Cover-Up

According to the CBI, the general diary entry was made in conspiracy with the hospital authorities and other unknown persons to keep the facts closed in the investigation. It is alleged that while entering the wrong details, the entry was making efforts to mislead the investigators to save persons connected with the crime.

A key failure in the probe is said to be that Mondal did not file the FIR immediately and also did not secure the crime scene. The CBI has also charged him with shielding police volunteer Sanjay Roy, who had entered the crime scene unauthorisedly. Sanjay Roy was detained based on CCTV footage.

Sanjay Roy, caught on CCTV entering the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College at 4:03 AM on that fateful day, was arrested the following day. His presence at the scene, coupled with his unauthorized entry, seems vital to be considered evidence in this case. Roy’s arrest has further added another dimension to this case as the authorities continue to gather pieces of evidence from the entire sequence of events leading up to the death of the trainee doctor.

High Court Orders CBI Probe

But later turned out to be a defining moment when on August 13, the Calcutta High Court asked the investigation to be transferred from Kolkata Police to CBI. On August 14, formally, the federal agency took charge of the case, and Ghosh as well as Mondal were arrested. Since then, CBI has been probing, having taken forensic evidence, and analysing the role of the people who were prominently involved in the case.

The rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College has shocked the medical fraternity not only by its brutality but also through questions about possible lapses and cover-up attempts by high officials. This stands out in the CBI probe now and also in the results of the polygraph test of Ghosh that involved a conspiracy and evidence tampering. As the case unfolds, the CBI aims to uncover the full extent of the crime and ensure justice for the victim.
