Duleep Trophy 2024: Dhruv Jurel Equals MS Dhoni’s This Wicket-Keeping Record

Dhruv Jurel, wicketkeeper of India A, imitated MS Dhoni as he took seven catches in a single inning in the continuing Duleep Trophy encounter between India A and India B at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The 22-year-old took seven catches in the second innings while India A allowed India B to get only 184 runs.

Jurel Equals MS Dhoni’s Record

This record brings Jurel in line with former Indian captain MS Dhoni, who achieved this feat in the 2004-05 season, playing for East Zone against Central Zone in a Duleep Trophy match. Prior to Dhoni, this record was held by one Sunil Benjamin, a player who made six catches and affected a stumping for Central Zone against North Zone in the 1973 final.

The 22-year-old Jurel played a crucial role in key dismissals, catching Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Nitish K Reddy, Sai Kishore, and Navdeep Saini. His outstanding wicketkeeping was instrumental in restricting India B to a manageable total. Despite his success behind the stumps, Jurel struggled with the bat, managing just two runs from sixteen balls in the first innings and being dismissed for a golden duck in the second.

Duleep Trophy: Most Catches By A Wicket-Keeper In An Innings

MS Dhoni (East Zone) – 7 catches vs Central Zone in 2004-05
Dhruv Jurel (India A) – 7 catches vs India B in 2024-25
Sunil Benjamin (Central Zone) – 6 catches vs North Zone in 1973-74
Sadanand Viswanat (South Zone) – 6 catches vs Central Zone in 1980-81

India A Vs India B

India B’s second innings folded up for 22 runs with the fall of three wickets. Sarfaraz Khan tried his best with 46 off 36 balls, and Rishabh Pant chipped in with 61 off 47. Other than their 72-run partnership, the rest of the batting was abysmally poor. Eventually, India B folded up for 184, leaving India A to get 275 for victory.

Akash Deep was the star for India A, picking up five wickets as the team’s excellent display in the field continued. India A, in reply, were 76/4 in 15 overs with KL Rahul 20* and Tanush Kotian 0* at the crease. India A still needed 199 runs to win with 63 overs remaining.
