RP Singh’s Son Harry Makes Surprise Debut As England’s Substitute Fielder In 1st Test Against Sri Lanka

England and Sri Lanka are currently engaged in a captivating contest in the rain-affected first Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. After two days of play, England holds a narrow advantage with a 23-run lead and four wickets remaining. For this match, England named three players from Lancashire Cricket—Charlie Barnard, Kesh Fonseka, and Harry Singh—as potential 12th men.

Harry Singh’s Debut Gains Spotlight

Harry Singh, aged 20 and an opening batter, was seen in action as a substitute fielder twice: once before lunch and again when Harry Brook needed to leave the field. Singh, who secured his first rookie contract with Lancashire in 2023, has notable ties to India. He is the son of RP Singh, a former India fast bowler who featured in two ODIs during the 1980s.

Harry Singh, an English cricketer representing Lancashire County Cricket Club, is the son of Rudra Pratap Singh, a former Indian cricketer. Rudra Pratap Singh, who played domestic cricket for Uttar Pradesh, made his mark in international cricket with two ODIs against Australia in 1986, where he took one wicket. In domestic circles, Rudra featured in 59 first-class matches, claiming 150 wickets at an average of 32.37, including five five-wicket hauls. He also played 21 List A games, taking 26 wickets at an average of 26.26, with one five-wicket haul. After marrying a British citizen, Rudra moved to England, where he played league cricket, completed his graduation, and became a professional coach.

‘Started Playing At The Age Of Four’: Says RP Singh’s Son Harry

Harry, born in June 2004, attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and followed his father’s cricketing legacy from a young age. He joined Lancashire’s pathway system at eight and entered their academy seven years later. Harry has also been part of England’s U-19 teams, including a recent tour of Australia.

“I started playing cricket at the age of four, joined Lancashire’s pathway system at eight and have been on the Lancs Academy since I was 15 – so it has been a long journey for me to reach this point,” Harry had told Lancashire’s official website after receiving his contract last year.

Harry has played seven List A matches to date, accumulating 87 runs in those games.
