Mamata Banerjee Writes To PM Modi, Calls For Tougher Anti-Rape Laws

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging for stricter legislation on rape cases. The move follows public outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata. Banerjee’s government has been heavily criticized for its handling of the case and the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital, where the incident occurred.

Blame Game Over Hospital Vandalism

The Supreme Court, which took note of the rape case, expressed its inability to understand how the state government failed to manage the vandalism at the hospital. In response, Mamata Banerjee blamed opposition parties, the BJP and the Left, for the destruction of evidence in the case, accusing them of orchestrating the vandalism.

Chief Minister’s Push for Capital Punishment

The horrific incident took place on August 9, when the trainee doctor was raped in the hospital’s seminar hall. Mamata Banerjee has vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused, a civic volunteer attached to the police. She also warned law enforcement that if the case was not solved by August 18, it would be transferred to the CBI. However, on August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the case be handed over to the CBI, citing significant lapses in the hospital’s administration and slow progress in the investigation.

Mass Rally

On August 17, Banerjee led a large rally in Kolkata, demanding justice for the victim and calling for the accused to be hanged. The rally underscored the increasing pressure on the state government to take decisive action in the case and ensure justice for the victim.
