In response to criticism that Sourav Ganguly downplayed the horrific rape and murder of trainee doctor in Kolkata, former India captain has opted to demonstrate his stance differently. Ganguly, who faced backlash for reportedly describing the incident as a ‘stray incident,’ has claimed his comments were taken out of context. Now, he has set his display picture, all black on the social media platform ‘X’ as a gesture of solidarity, which has sparked a range of reactions.
Ganguly updated his display picture to black, on Monday with the caption ‘New Profile Pic.’ While his intent may have been to express solidarity and support for the victim and the ongoing investigation, not all users interpreted it that way. Many criticized the former India captain, suggesting that his action was an insufficient response to the serious issue at hand.
Sourav Ganguly’s stance has left internet divided. While some think that he has expressed his solidarity, others have the opinion calling such a brutal incident as ‘stray’
‘Don’t know how it was interpreted’- says Sourav Ganguly
“I said that last Sunday, I don’t know how it was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier also, it’s a terrible thing. Now the CBI, police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened,” Ganguly had said to reporters.
“The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe,” he had added.
The probe into the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case has been entrusted to two of the CBI‘s top female officers, renowned for their expertise in handling high-profile investigations. Sampat Meena, a 1994-batch IPS officer from Jharkhand who previously led investigations into the Hathras and Unnao rape cases, will oversee the inquiry. She will be assisted by Seema Pahuja, a key member of the Hathras investigation team.
