Aman Sehrawat secured a 12-0 victory by technical superiority over Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakanov in the men’s 57kg quarterfinal on Thursday at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Aman, making his debut at the Olympics, has reached the semifinals in the 57kg freestyle wrestling category. Following his victory over a Macedonian opponent in the earlier round, he convincingly overcame Zelimkhan to advance to the final four. His success has rekindled India’s chances for a wrestling medal, especially after Vinesh Phogat’s disappointing loss on August 7.
The win guaranteed Aman Sehrawat a spot in the medal matches. He will fight against Japan’s Rei Higuchi later on Thursday in the semifinals. A victory over the top-seeded Japanese wrestler will secure at least a silver medal for Aman, while a loss will lead him to compete in the bronze-medal bout.
Earlier in the day, Aman had defeated North Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov with a 10-0 scoreline in his round of 16 match.
In the women’s 57kg category, India’s Anshu Malik lost 7-2 to Helen Louise Maroulis of the USA, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist. Maroulis advanced to the semifinals, and if she makes it to the final, Anshu will have a chance to compete in the repechage round.
