‘Cheap, Trashy’…..Indian Olympic Uniforms By Tarun Tahiliani Spark Social Media Backlash

At the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, star shuttler PV Sindhu and seasoned table tennis player Sharath Kamal proudly led the group of 78 Indian athletes and officials as flagbearers during the Parade of Nations along the River Seine. However, fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani’s ikat-inspired uniforms for the Indian contingent faced immediate criticism after Team India, dressed in the national flag’s colors, marched down the River Seine. The uniforms were heavily criticized as lacking in quality and failing to impress, sparking widespread disappointment on social media platforms.

During the opening ceremony, open to Paris residents, visitors from across France, and worldwide, Indian athletes showcased ceremonial outfits from TASVA, designed by Tarun Tahiliani.

Outcry Over Olympic Uniforms

The men were attired in kurta bundi sets, while the women wore matching saris that mirrored India’s tricolour flag. These outfits highlighted traditional ikat-inspired prints and Banarasi brocade designs.

However, as images circulated on social media, Tarun Tahiliani faced criticism for his perceived ‘mediocre’ work.

“Another critic remarked, ‘From a country renowned for its textiles and weaves, our athletes are sporting digital prints at the biggest sporting event! Am I the only one disappointed by this?’

Another commenter expressed, ‘For a nation celebrated for its diverse fabrics and master craftsmanship, passed down through generations… this effort is pitiful and embarrassing. The tacky stitched-on shoulder patch is just the beginning.’

“Hello, Tarun Tahiliani! I’ve seen better sarees sold on Mumbai streets for Rs. 200 than these ‘designed’ ceremonial uniforms of yours. Cheap polyester-like fabric, Ikat PRINT (!!!), tricolours haphazardly thrown together with no imagination. Did you outsource this to an intern or throw it together in the last 3 minutes before the deadline? It’s a disgrace to the rich weaving culture and history of India,” added another user, X.

For those unfamiliar, Tarun Tahiliani’s recent creations were prominently featured at the lavish wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, including outfits worn by celebrities like Kim Kardashian. Some online users referenced these previous designs while comparing them unfavorably to the criticized Olympics uniforms.

Tahiliani’s Design Philosophy Clarified

In an exclusive interview with The Hindu, Tarun Tahiliani previously justified his decision to opt for ikat prints rather than traditional weaves. The designer, based in New Delhi, described ikat as symbolizing a weaving tradition practiced across India.

However, due to time constraints, Tahiliani’s Tasva team resorted to using digital print techniques for the ikat patterns.

Explaining the choice of viscose over cotton, Tahiliani emphasized that cotton would have wrinkled severely. “We chose viscose because it’s derived from wood pulp and offers breathability. It’s cooler than silk,” he noted. “Considering the athletes would spend up to five hours in the heat on a barge, breathability was a critical factor we had to address.”
