After major clashes between two groups of people over the Ram Navami procession in West Bengal’s Howrah district, the ruling Trinamool Congress hit out at the BJP for the violence. Several leaders of the state’s ruling party shared visuals of saffron-clad men brandishing guns and violent weapons during processions in Howrah.
“What does celebrating the birth of Lord Ram, the 7th avatar of Vishnu have to do with brandishing guns & weapons, BJP? Or is every festival an excuse for mayhem & rioting?” Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra tweeted while sharing the video of a man holding a revolved amidst a Ram Navami crowd.
Revolver on Ramnavami! What is BJP doing!!! So many attempts to disturb Bengal. Let them be found and arrested,” TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh jotted while tweeting more videos of armed men on the streets.
Party leader Kirti Azad also made a similar tweet on Friday. “BJP goons waving a revolver. They have no fear of police, law. BJP’s breath, bread, water runs on Hindu Muslim,” he wrote in Hindi while sharing the video.
The situation remained tense in West Bengal’s Howrah on Friday as stone-pelting incidents were reported from the area.
Senior religious leaders have assembled in the area and trying to assuage tension. In order to maintain law and order in the area, a large number of policemen were deployed.
The city police conducted searches and raids in different pockets around Kazipara and arrested at least 35 people in connection with Ram Navami procession clashes.
