Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma eye Sachin Tendulkar’s massive record during the 3rd ODI against Australia

The third and final ODI of the three-match series between India and Australia will take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday (March 22). The series is level at 1-1 after both teams won one game each out of the first two. The winner of the Chennai ODI will take the series, and so after a forgetful outing in the second ODI, which was played in Vizag, the Men in Blue batters would like to come up with a much-improved batting show. In the second match, which was played on Sunday (March 19), Team India could only manage to score 117 runs in 26 overs after being invited to bat first. The visitors didn’t take much time to chase it down and finished the game in just 11 overs without losing a wicket.
In the second ODI, Indian batters failed to convert a good start into big totals, but with the series at stake, one can expect them to learn from their mistakes and perform well. The onus will once again be on Indian captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli to lead the way. The two modern-day legends have a good track record against the Australian team in ODI matches. They are among the only five batters who have managed to score more than 2000 runs against the five-time ODI World Cup champions in 50-over matches.
With 2221 runs in 41 matches, Rohit sits at the No. 3 position in the list of all-time leading run getters against Australia in ODIs, whereas with 2118 runs from 45 games, Virat is at the fifth spot. The legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar is at the No. 1 position with 3077 runs from 71 matches. During the third ODI, Rohit will have a chance to move up to the No. 2 position in the all-time list. He needs 42 runs to break former West Indies opener Desmond Haynes’ record of 2262 runs against Australia. Virat can also move up to the fourth position by leapfrogging Sir Vivan Richards, who scored 2187 runs against the Australian team.

4. Sir Vivian Richards West Indies 54 2187 50.86 153* 3/20
5. Virat Kohli India 45 2118 52.95 123 8/10

But apart from moving up the list of highest run scorers, during the third ODI, Rohit and Virat will have a chance to equal Tendulkar’s record of most centuries against Australia in one-dayers. During his playing days, Sachin scored nine centuries against the most successful team in World Cup history, and in comparatively fewer games than him, Virat and Rohit have already scored eight 100s against them. If they manage to reach the triple-figure mark on Wednesday, they will reach the joint No. 1 position in the list of batters with the most ODI centuries against Australia.
